Dwarf Hamsters Breeding

You may have been thinking about breeding dwarf hamsters. You may also be thinking that all you need is a hamster mom and a dad and some tiny hamster babies. But thinks aren’t this easy.

Just by getting the mom and the dad inside a cage you will not make them breed. Breeding these lovely creatures is not that easy and you need to think about everything. Plan everything in advance and always have solutions for the problems that can appear.

First of all, you need to know in advance what you will do with the babies, when they appear. Then you need to carefully select the parents. Have you though what you are going to do with the babies once they are born? If you are just thinking of making a profit out of selling them to a pet store, you may want to think that again. There are a lot of pet stores that don’t accept baby hamsters. Besides that, you should know that a hamster usually has four to six babies. Campbell Russian hamsters are known to sometimes have even 14 pups in a single litter.

If you want them for yourself then you need to think if you can handle them and take good care of them. When they are small, there is no problem. But once they grow up, they need to be separated and avoid overcrowding their habitat. It is a big deal.

Besides that, the hamsters could develop some illnesses. What if they are suddenly ill? Can you treat them? Do you have the time and the money to take care of them and give them professional medical attention? Sometimes, the hamster mom dies when she gives birth. For you, that means you will have to feed the babies from the bottle. Are you able to deal with that whole responsibility? Do you know what to do or you have the finances to do it? If necessary, can you stay committed to that?

If you have read all this carefully and you are still thinking of doing this, then there are some other things you need to be aware of. We can call it groundwork. I have previously said that you need to decide who the parents will be. Before doing that, you need to dig all you can about the future parents. This means you will have to do some research. It is vital. Their genetic history is very important.

If somewhere in the past their ancestors had some flaws or diseases, you need to know. Some things could threaten the life of the babies and you don’t want that. Many hamsters in the pet stores don’t have a family history. Try to go to breeders and take the hamsters from there. You need a clean bill of health for them. Any information that is relevant about their health is important. You need to know everything that will make you have healthy and strong hamster babies. Be aware of their size and also the temperament. The temperament of the pair is very important. Each dwarf hamster has his own personality and that influences how the babies will be. When you are choosing the parents, think about their personality also.

You need to take into consideration all the traits of the hamsters, good or even bad. Pay attention to their colors also. There are some hamsters with certain colors that must not be bred with others that have a distinct genetic make-up. In this way, you avoid the birth defects and you have healthy hamster babies.
